Chicago Meetup (June 28) and London Meetup/Terrible Book Swap (June 14)

Interior shot of the Chicago Cultural Center
Cultural Center…sooooo pretty.

From DigitalTart, arranging Chicago Fun Times:

Date: Saturday, 6/28/2014

Time: 4:00pm

Location: The Chicago Cultural Center Lobby (1st floor), 78 E Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602.

Transportation: By CTA, a whole slew of busses and trains. By Metra/Electric District/South Shore Line, Millenium Station. By car not recommended due to obscenely high cost of parking.

How to Find Me: I’ll have a big sign saying ‘The Awkward Table’. And have name tags this time.  They are dorky but so useful.

How to Get in Touch Before the Meetup:  I will be reading and replying to comments as ‘DigitalTart’ both on this post on the CA main page, and the thread in the forums at http://friendsofcaptainawkward.com.  Any suggestions about improvements to or new activities for Chicago meetups are encouraged.

Optional Bonus Activity: Meetup may be extended and moved to eatin’ of delicious foods at Chi Cafe in the Chinatown mall. Please note that this spot, like most in Chinatown, is not  recommended for strict vegetarians/vegans or those with seafood allergies, as most dishes make use of meat- or seafood-based flavorings or sauces.

I’ll be out of town that weekend, so can’t join you, but have the best time. I’m so glad these are becoming a regular thing.
The indomitable Kate had a great idea for the next London Meetup, June 14. Are you ready?

Not too shabby, London.

Dear all,

And here it is again – Bad Book Swap: The Sequel!

Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, SE1 8XX near Waterloo station, 14th June, 11am onwards.

Due to popular demand I am re-running the Bad Book Swap. The idea here is that you bring a book you dislike for any reason (weak plot, female characters as plot tokens, too much – or too little – torture for your tastes, etc.)

And then you try to persuade someone else to take it away.
I had great success last time in getting someone to take away two books about how much manpain someone was in because he was forced to torture people and enjoyed it too much…
If you don’t have any bad books to give away, never mind – you might be able to provide a home for someone else’s!  Or just come and chat. This venue is working out really well.

They sell food in a cafe (standard sandwiches etc.), but they also don’t mind people bringing food in from outside. There are several other local places where you can buy stuff as well. The excellent food market outside has loads of different food options, which can fit most food requirements, or you can also bring a packed lunch.

Meet on the fourth floor, outside the Blue Bar (go up in the JCB lift, lift 7, which is bright yellow and quite musical).  If you have been to a meetup previously on the second floor, we are now in the equivalent place horizontally, but two floors up vertically, if that makes sense?

Here is the internal map of the Royal Festival Hall: http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/sites/default/files/documents/RFH_map.pdfI will have my Cthulhu with me, which looks like this: http://forbiddenplanet.com/3950-cthulhu-baby-plush/ I have long brown hair and glasses.

The venue is accessible via a lift, and has accessible toilets.

The London Awkward group has a Facebook page, which is here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/549571375087294/.  There is also a thread in the new forums for saying hello.

(July meetup will be on the 12th.)

Cheers,

Kate

Please, if you remember, snap a photo of the book titles & covers. I want to see the horrifying array!
If you want to plan your own event, suggested guidelines are here. You don’t have to ask permission or check with anyone first. People often use the forums at friendsofcaptainawkward.com to gauge interest before sending me the info to post.
