Meetups: Saturday in London, OccuPie in Chicago Tonight!

This isn’t a Awkward Army event, per se, but if you are in Chicago and get a free moment tonight, stop by Wicker Park for some pie (& revolution!) from frequent commenter Sarahcircusnachos. They’ll be set up at 6:00 pm by the water fountain near Damen & Schiller. Bringing your own food &/or something potluck to share is totally welcome but in no way required. Free pie until they run out of pie, free comradeship always. The pie recipe is on her site so you can tell in advance if it’s safe for you to eat. I will definitely be there, probably taking pictures, so say hello if you stop by.

Hello, London! Sorry I didn’t get the notice up before the weekend.

Hello!

The next London meetup will start at 11am on June 1st, in the Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX.  It’s on the bank of the Thames near Waterloo station.

Everyone is welcome.

There’s a big open area on the first floor (accessible via lift), with loads of tables scattered around.  They have accessible toilets etc.

They sell food in a cafe (standard sandwiches, soup, cakes), but they also don’t mind people bringing food in from outside, either as a packed lunch or as takeaway from any of the many local restaurants and cafes.  I have done this myself with no hassle.

This is probably the ultimate solution to the problem of hosting people with different dietary requirements, so it fits in well with recent Awkward discussion!

I have long brown hair and glasses. I will bring my plush Cthulhu to use as a table marker. It looks like this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/7cb0/

My email address is kate DOT towner AT gmail DOT com, and we have a Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/549571375087294/

I can’t say exactly where I will be on the first floor – I’ll try to bag a sofa, or failing that a couple of tables.  Just wander around until you find me and Cthulhu…

Cheers,

Kate

In other news, the Boston meetup was reported as “fun, though rainy” and the Sheffield crew has formed a Facebook group for future planning purposes.

Oh man I wish I had known about Chicago’s earlier. Again, soon, please!

I wish I’d publicized it earlier, sorry!

Currently a nice poster is coming up for a way for people without in-unit laundry to get together and have a laundromat party, and now that it’s nice out I vote for going back to the gelato place and saying hello to everyone. Will keep you posted. Better.

Laundromat gelato party? I’m sorry, I might just have to never leave Chicago.

  2. Hello lovely Londoners. Finals week, so I’m probably going to skip this one too, but hope to see you all again soon! xx

    • Good luck! I’m not sure yet when exactly the next one will be, but probably one of the first two weekends in July. I’ll put it in the FB group when I know.

Just a heads up that the London meet clashes with an anti-BNP demo in Woolwich and a national day of bedroom tax demos, so don’t be disheartened if there is a low turnout, leftie types are being pulled in all directions that weekend!

      Thanks for letting me know!

  4. In case anyone’s confused, I’m in the back by a window, facing the queen Elizabeth hall.

Just on the train back from the London meetup now. I had a great time; thanks to everybody for making me feel welcome, and a huge thank you to Kate for organising.

Next time I am going to bring baked goods, I think. They may only be a pale plastic giraffe of what you lot deserve, but I hope they’ll be welcome.

Now please excuse me while I giggle about magical Cherokee blood, Morris dancing Hell’s Angels, and Jesus turning Ribena into Mixed Fruit Oasis (was that what it was? I’m trying to remember?)
